•BS 7272-2:2008: Revised in 2014 (i.e., BS 7272-2:2008+A1:2014), primarily specifies the safety requirements for End Closures.
1. Scope of Application
The BS 7272 standard applies to all types of writing and marking instruments designed for or likely to be used by children under 14 years of age.
2. Excluded Products
•Writing instruments explicitly intended for adult use only (e.g., jewelry pens, expensive collectible fountain pens, professional technical pens).
•Refill caps/covers sold separately as replacement parts.
•Erasers and their protective caps.
•Styluses designed for use with touchscreens.
3. BS 7272-1:2008 Safety Requirements for Pen CapsPen caps must meet at least one of the following requirements:1) Cap Size:
•Test Method: The cap, under its own weight, is passed through a specific-sized ring gauge (16 mm thick, 19 mm deep).
•Requirement: At least 5 mm of the top end of the cap must not pass through this gauge. This ensures the cap is large enough to not fully enter and block a child's airway.
2)Ventilated Caps:
•Test Method: The airflow through the cap is tested using a standard method.
•Requirement: The cap must allow an airflow of at least 8 liters per minute. This ensures a minimum level of breathing is maintained even if the cap is inhaled.
4. BS 7272-2:2008+A1:2014 Safety Requirements for End ClosuresEnd closures on pens must meet at least one of the following requirements:
| Test Item | Test Method | Requirement |
| Size | Pass under own gravity through a 16mm thick, 19mm deep ring gauge. | Must not pass through the gauge. |
| Security | Apply a 50 N force (approx. 5.1 kgf) to the end closure. | The end closure must not become detached. |
| Inaccessibility | The end closure is fully recessed into the barrel; a 10 N pull force is applied. | The end closure cannot be pulled off. |
| Minimal Protrusion | Measure the size of the exposed part; apply a 10 N force. | Total exposed length ≤3 mm, cylindrical part ≤1 mm, and must not detach. |
| Air Flow | Test the airflow through the end closure using a standard method; apply a 10 N pull force. | Allows ≥8 L/min airflow and does not detach under 10 N force. |
| Additional Protection | For end closures fixed by thread or covering the barrel. | Must simultaneously meet Security (50 N force) and Air Flow (8 L/min) requirements. |
5. Important Notes
1)Identification Requirement: The product itself, its packaging, or instructions must be permanently and clearly marked with the manufacturer's name, trademark, or other traceable identification. This is crucial evidence for traceability and compliance.
2)Test Report: The test report must clearly indicate which specific clauses of the standard the product complies with.
3)Declaration of Conformity: Suppliers or manufacturers typically need to provide a test report issued by an accredited third-party laboratory to prove their products comply with the BS 7272 standard.
