The RoHS Directive restricts four phthalates, which are primarily used as plasticizers. The maximum permitted concentration for each of these substances is 0.1% (1000 ppm) by weight in homogeneous materials. These four substances were newly added to China's mandatory national standard GB 26572—2025 in August 2025.

Table 1. Key Information on the Four Restricted Phthalates

Substance Abbr.Full English NameCommon Application AreasHealth & Environmental Risks
DEHPDi(2-ethylhexyl) phthalateWire & cable insulation, plastic casings, soft PVC components (e.g., some equipment grips or seals)Endocrine disruptor; may affect reproductive and developmental systems; can leach from waste, polluting soil and water sources.
BBPBenzyl butyl phthalateFlooring materials, artificial leather, plastic parts in some electronicsPotential carcinogen; may affect liver and kidney; not easily degradable, accumulates in the environment.
DBPDibutyl phthalateInks, coatings, adhesives, electronic component encapsulation materialsMay impair fertility; developmental toxin; toxic to aquatic life.
DIBPDiisobutyl phthalateUsed as a substitute for DBP in some coatings, adhesives, and plastic productsSimilar to DBP; reproductive toxicity and environmentally persistent.
